Latest News - Greyhound Board Bags Faulkner as new Chief Executive

25/02/2010

The Greyhound Board of Great Britain (GBGB) announced today that Barry Faulkner has been appointed as its new Chief Executive.

Faulkner, a well known and respected figure throughout the British racing and betting industries as a senior executive of both the Association of British Bookmakers (ABB) and Bookmakers Afternoon Greyhound Services (BAGS), will join GBGB on or before 1st June following the completion of his current contractual obligations.

GBGB Chairman Maurice Watkins said today:

“We enjoyed an excellent response to our advertisement and were fortunate to be selecting from a strong field. The clear enthusiasm among the candidates and their belief in the quality and potential of greyhound racing was extremely encouraging and I would like to thank everyone who applied for the position.

“Barry was an impressive interviewee, demonstrating his knowledge of and passion for greyhound racing. His detailed understanding of the workings of the betting industry and relationships with its key players will be invaluable to us; to attract such an experienced executive from the bookmaking world is something of a coup for GBGB, while the nature of his work at the ABB means that he understands the logistics working with a representative board with a range of interests.

“During his 11 years at BAGS, Barry has been involved with all aspects of greyhound racing management, setting high standards of integrity, developing systems to improve the management of racing data and more recently leading a project to consider ways of increasing the popularity of the sport in betting shops; he has a clear appreciation of the aspects of greyhound racing which are more and less popular with punters. He is also well aware of the commercial realities of the industry and the pressures felt by trainers, owners and racecourse operators during current economic conditions.

“I have no doubt that he will enjoy working with the GBGB staff and they will together form an effective and successful team for the industry to support the future work of the Board.”

Newly-Appointed GBGB Chief Executive Barry Faulkner said:

“I am delighted to be joining the Greyhound Board at this challenging time and look forward to developing positive relationships with all stakeholders in the industry.

"The Greyhound Board has an excellent team in place. They are dedicated and passionate about this great sport, which deserves to be appreciated by a wider audience. I look forward to guiding that process, to enable everyone who is involved in this inclusive industry to thrive.”
